The client was regarded as a leader in the telecommunications technology. They were one of the first companies to develop a self contained system that allowed the user to send images and documents from a PC direct to a receiving fax machine. The software and hardware were being developed at a very fast rate with new product releases every few months. The client could not make a major investment in a new enclosure because it would be obsolete in a few months. The brief was to design a robust, low cost enclosure that could be reconfigured at no cost and engineered to be capable of taking the weight of a typical PC monitor.
The client set a very small budget for tooling. The only option was to design an enclosure based on a combination of sheet metal and one aluminium extrusion. Three build concepts were proposed and presented as actual size card models for comparison.
One concept was chosen and developed to a full set of component drawings.
