The client was a high street name for the rental of domestic Brown and White Goods with more 500 shops in prime locations across the UK. In recent years domestic electronics have became more reliable and affordable but at that time the rental market had been a significant part of the high street for many years. It was not uncommon for people to rent washing machines, televisions and video recorders on short term term hire contracts. The client was aware that a large amount of damage to goods was caused by their own delivery and collection staff moving goods to and from customers property after the original packaging had been disposed of. This dramatically reduced the end of rental life income when used goods were disposed of through specialist clearance houses. The client had identified a substantial increase in profit if the condition of its rental goods could be maintained as high as possible.

The brief was to undertake a feasibility study and propose designs for a low cost, reusable, rigid and robust protective 'packaging' for moving small and large TV's, video units and domestic white goods.

The first stage was to research and prepare concept designs for two sizes of protective covers. The designs were based on rotational mouldings and were developed to full working prototypes and component drawings. Unfortunately the rental market for White Goods was slowing prior to experiencing a rapid decline and the concepts remained on hold and never progressed into tooling.
